Best Practices in Serving Native American Students

Hi folks,

Do you want to know how to best serve Native American students in your office or class?

Are you interested in learning more about American Indian higher educational experiences, including factors contributing to success and attrition?

Please join us for an extraordinary event on Monday, January 7, from 9:00-4:00 in MUC Ballroom B/C.  This program features Terry Huffman, author of this semester's CTL reading group book:  American Indian Higher Educational Experiences.  Terry is Professor of Education at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.  He is a graduate of Northern State University and Iowa State and is a former member of the South Dakota American Indian Studies Council. If you would like to share some questions or comments about his book, please post a comment here. We will share them with him prior to the workshop.

Other honored leaders and workshop facilitators include:

Gene Thin Elk, Director, Native Student Services, The University of South Dakota
Beth Boyd, Director, Psychology Service Center
Jason Murray, Associate Director of Diversity

This event will feature the following:
  • Native opening and closing protocols
  • Native American student panel
  • Workshop on factors contributing to the success and attrition of Native American students
  • Presentation of research related to Native educators who serve in reservation schools
  • Interactive session on identifying and working through Native American stereotypes
All of this, and lunch and snacks will be provided!

This event is a collaboration between Native Student Services, the School of Education, the Department of Psychology, the Academic and Career Planning Center, the Office for Diversity, and the Center for Teaching and Learning.

All faculty, staff, and GTAs are invited!

If you would like to attend, please register by January 3 by calling 605-677-5411 or by emailing the CTL at CTL@usd.edu.  Portions of this workshop will be videotaped for those who cannot attend.
